SUBJECT: Sterilizer Wheel Operation for San -I -Pak <br />PURPOSE: To ensure that the sterilizing of medical waste is appropriately documented. <br />RESPONSIBILITY: Designated Kaiser Permanente EVS staff (operator) will be responsible for <br />running and ensuring the documentation of the sterilization process for each <br />load of waste <br />PROCEDURE: The paper wheel must be placed inside the glass compartment of the San -I -Pak <br />at the start of operations daily. <br />Each wheel should document the sterilization process for approximately 24 <br />hours; if the load is properly run, the meter should read at a level >_ 250° F for <br />30 minutes. <br />If the San -I -Pak does not reach the appropriate temperature, the operator must <br />then contact the Engineering department with a request for repair. The operator <br />should then document on the back of the wheel their name, time and date and <br />the time and date Engineering was contacted. The EVS staff operator should <br />then notify the EVS manager or supervisor. <br />When the San -I -Pak has been repaired, the EVS operator must document on <br />the back of the wheel the repair by engineering and the time and date that the <br />San -I -Pak is put back into service. <br />If the San -I -Pak needs re -calibration, Engineering will contact San -I -Pak and <br />all re -calibration documentation shall be put in the EVS manager's office. <br />EMERGENCY In the event of a failure of the San -I -Pak, medical waste will be placed in the <br />TREATMENT secondary container.
