Medical Waste Management Plan <br /> Kaiser Permanente — Tracy <br /> 1. List the types of Medical Waste generated at your facility: <br /> • Clinical and other biological waste <br /> • Sharps (needles, syringes, blades etc.) <br /> • Patient care items from rooms or areas in which special isolation precautions have <br /> been utilized <br /> • Pharmaceutical waste–Non-hazardous <br /> 2. Estimate the monthly amount of medical waste generated at your facility: <br /> • Kaiser Permanente Tracy will generate greater than 200 pounds/month. <br /> 3. Describe the medical waste handling procedures utilized by and applicable to <br /> your facility: <br /> (a) Onsite location and method for segregation, containment, packaging, labeling, <br /> and collection <br /> Each department is responsible for separating bio-hazardous waste at the point of <br /> origin and disposing of them in containers lined with red infectious waste bags or, if <br /> red bags are temporarily unavailable, in containers clearly marked on all sides with <br /> words " Bio-Hazardous Waste". Sharps are to be contained first in locked, impervious <br /> bio-hazardous containers. Pharmaceutical waste are segregated, contained and labeled <br /> according to appendix ": A". <br /> Reusable rigid containers are used to transport medical waste from the department to <br /> the containment area. These containers shall be maintained in a clean and sanitary <br /> manner. The method of decontamination is exposure to germicide solution for a <br /> minimum of three minutes or exposure to hot water of at least 180 degrees Fahrenheit <br /> for a minimum of 15 seconds. <br /> (b) Storage area description with storage methods utilized, including duration and <br /> temperature, if applicable. <br /> The facility maintains a secured area for storage of biohazardous waste pending <br /> disposal. The storage area is marked with warnings that read in English and Spanish" <br /> Caution biohazardous Waste Storage Area—Unauthorized Persons Keep Out". These <br /> signs are legible from a distance of at least 25 feet. Biohazardous waste shall not be <br /> stored on-site for more than seven days before disposal. Biohazardous waste is not <br /> stored on the premises for more than 96 hours. <br />
