0
Medical Waste Management Plan
Kaiser Permanente — Tracy
(h) Describe your medical waste emergency action plan, including procedures for
handling spills, exposures, equipment failures, etc.
Purpose of the Kaiser Permanente Tracy medical waste emergency action plan is to
assure that all medical waste is properly handled and disposed to eliminate exposure
to the public of possible disease causing agents which may be present in this type of
waste. To minimize the human contact with potentially infectious materials, waste
devices and instruments by ensuring the safe packaging, storage, treatment and
disposal of medical waste.
All spills are to be reported to the Environmental Services department for proper
clean up. Spills must be cleaned up immediately by a properly trained person using
appropriate personal protective equipment in relation to the spill. Spray the spill area
with a germicide. The disinfectant should be sprayed thoroughly over the spilled
material. Spraying directly onto or into the spill will disturb as well as spread the
material. Contain the spill by placing absorbent material, disposable towels. Once the
material is contained, it is to be placed into red bags to identify it as biohazardous
waste. If sharps are involved, these are to be placed into sharp's containers for
disposal. After all the material is picked up and properly double bagged, the
contaminated area should then be wet wiped or mopped with a fresh solution of
germicide. Once the area is dry, the barricade and wet floor sign may be removed. All
liquid waste such as the mop water, and rinse water shall be deposited into the
sanitary sewer, and then the containers and sink shall be sprayed with germicide
solution and allowed to air dry. All personal protective equipment used in the clean
up shall be discarded, if disposable is used. If an employee exposure occurs, the
employee shall be directed to occupational medicine to be evaluated.
