Needles and sharps are collected in disposable, rigid, puncture -proof containers and placed into
the lined reusable plastic tubs for transporting to storage area and stored. The reusable collection
tubs are kept in the soiled utility rooms in the areas where medical waste is generated until
collected for transporting to storage areas by Environmental Service Technicians.
4. Chemotherapeutic waste is placed in the appropriate boxes in the fenced area.
5. Medical waste will be placed into the approved biohazardous bags inside a sturdy, reusable plastic
container, or collection tub. Proper collection tubs for medical waste are always labeled as
"INFECTIOUS WASTE" or "BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE" and are covered securely with lids. Labels
are placed on the top and sides of collection tubs so that it can be easily read.
a. Tubs are lined with a red biohazardous bag before waste is placed into tubs.
b. The collection tub is use for transporting medical waste to the storage area and must have
the lid remain tightly secured while stored and waiting for offsite disposal.
C. The collection tub is portable and must not be allowed to become so full that the lid cannot
be closed securely.
d. Never use the medical waste collection tubs or carts for a purpose other than collecting
and transporting biohazardous waste bags. Never use the containers for storage or
collection of other materials or items.
6. Medical waste is not allowed to accumulate for more than seven (7) days before offsite disposal.
D. SPILL CONTAINMENT AND CLEANUP
Spills of medical waste are contained immediately. Environmental Services is contacted to clean the area
with the appropriate germicidal solution.Materials used during the containment and cleanup process is
placed into the red biohazardous waste bags for appropriate disposal as medial waste items. Reports of all
spills, exposures or injuries resulting from the handling of medical waste is documented through the
hospital Occurrence Reporting system.
E. TRANSPORTING COLLECTED MEDICAL WASTE
1. Biohazardous waste is removed from the source of generation by nursing and is then placed into
collection tubs located inside dirty utility rooms at each facility.
2. Environmental Service Technicians then transport the collection tubs to designated areas for offsite
disposal or sterilization, according to the facility. Medical waste is transported from areas where
generated to the waste storage cages or locked containers by the most direct route, minimizing
exposure to patients, visitors, staff, and community.
3. Medical waste will not be placed in the compactor where routine solid waste is collected for
disposal.
4. Some types of medical waste generated at the MAIN FACILITY are processed using an autoclaving
biohazardous waste sterilizer. The waste sterilizer is located in the loading dock area north of the
building.
