Lodi Memorial Hospital
Facilities Management
Medical Waste Management Plan
D. SPILL CONTAINMENT AND CLEANUP
Revised: September 1998
In the event a leak or spill occurs, Environmental Services must be contacted immediately to confine the spill and to
clean the area. Surfaces are decontaminated with a quaternary ammonium solution with a minimum of 400 ppm
active agent. The solution is applied to the entire surface and allowed to remain in contact for a minimum of 10
minutes to complete the disinfecting process. Interior storage rooms, counters, and surfaces that may have come
in contact with medical waste contamination must be disinfected. Portable tubs and rigid containers are removed
from the building and taken to the north supply delivery/loading area at either facility for disinfecting.
Materials used or collected, including excess solution is absorbed into disposable paper toweling and discarded
directly into medical waste containers even though it is now rendered non -hazardous. All exterior areas where
decontamination is performed must be washed down with water prior to leaving the area. This clean rinse water is
allowed to run into the storm drain.
Reports of all spills, exposures or injuries resulting from the handling of medical waste is documented through the
hospital Occurrence Reporting system.
E. MEDICAL WASTE TREATMENT AND DISPOSAL METHODS
At the MAIN FACILITY only, a Mark -Costello autoclave is used for medical waste sterilization. A contracted service
provider identified below removes all other medical waste for treatment and disposal. Records of transported
medical waste are retained in Facilities Management for a period of 3 years.
Waste Hauler:
BFI MEDICAL WASTE SYSTEMS OF CALIFORNIA, INC.
3326 Fitzgerald Rd.
Rancho Cordova, CA 95742
EMERGENCY RESPONSE TELEPHONE: (800) 234-0051
Waste Treatment Facility:
TREATMENT SITE Permit # MWTF, #99-00043
BFI MEDICAL WASTE SYSTEMS
4135 W. Swift Ave.
Fresno, CA 93722
F. EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN
While it is highly unlikely that the contracted company would experience a shutdown of operations, contingencies
include use of an alternate hauler or retention of the medical waste for not more than 7 days from the point of
generation above 0° Centigrade (32° Fahrenheit). Another contingency for less well-defined emergency situations
would be to contact the Local Enforcement Agency (Department of Health Services, Medical Waste Program) for
guidance at (916) 327-6904.
I declare under penalty of law that, to the best of my knowledge and belief, the statements made herein are correct and
true.
