Always use the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during collection or handling of
medical waste. This includes the use of fluid proof gloves, cover coat and face shield when there
may be a risk of splashing into the face area such as during the cleanup of a spill.
2. Medical waste is segregated from other types of waste by containment in disposable biohazardous
bags that are a minimum of 1.5 mil in thickness, moisture proof, and meet A.S.T.M. standards. The
bags are red in color and printed to identify contents.
3. Needles and sharps are collected in disposable, rigid, puncture -proof containers and placed into
the lined reusable plastic tubs for transporting to storage area and stored. The reusable collection
tubs are kept in the soiled utility rooms in the areas where medical waste is generated until
collected for transporting to storage areas by Environmental Service Technicians.
4. Chemotherapeutic waste is placed in the appropriate boxes in the fenced area.
5. Medical waste will be placed into the approved biohazardous bags inside a sturdy, reusable plastic
container, or collection tub. Proper collection tubs for medical waste are always labeled with the
words "BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE" or with the international biohazard symbol and the word
"BIOHAZARD", and are covered securely with lids. Labels are placed on the top and sides of
collection tubs so that it can be easily read.
a. Tubs are lined with a red biohazardous bag before waste is placed into tubs.
b. The collection tub is use for transporting medical waste to the storage area and must have
the lid remain tightly secured while stored and waiting for offsite disposal.
C. The collection tub is portable and must not be allowed to become so full that the lid cannot
be closed securely.
d. Never use the medical waste collection tubs or carts for a purpose other than collecting
and transporting biohazardous waste bags. Never use the containers for storage or
collection of other materials or items.
6. Medical waste is not allowed to accumulate for more than seven (7) days before offsite disposal.
D. SPILL CONTAINMENT AND CLEANUP
In the event a leak or spill occurs, Environmental Services must be contacted immediately to confine the
spill and to clean the area.
Surfaces are decontaminated with a quaternary ammonium solution with a minimum of 400 ppm
active agent.
2. The solution is applied to the entire surface and allowed to remain in contact for a minimum of 10
minutes to complete the disinfecting process.
3. Interior storage rooms, counters, and surfaces that may have come in contact with medical waste
contamination must be disinfected.
4. Portable tubs and rigid containers are removed from the building and taken to the north supply
delivery/loading area at either facility for disinfecting.
5. Materials used or collected, including excess solution is absorbed into disposable paper toweling
and discarded directly into medical waste containers even though it is now rendered non-
