Page 1 of 2 <br />8440 <br />Effective: 1/19/90 <br />Reviewed: 1991,1992 <br />1993 <br />Revised: 1994 <br />LODI MEMORIAL HOSPITAL <br />ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES <br />INFECTIOUS WASTE STERILIZER <br />POLICY: It is the policy of L.M.H. to render infectious waste to <br />a steril state prior to disposal in the solid waste <br />compactor at the main physility. All sharps at all sites <br />and infectious waste at L.M.H.W. and the Conrad building <br />are hauled by a licensed hauler. <br />PROCEDURE: <br />1. All employees required to operate the waste sterilizer <br />must be trained/oriented in the full operation of the <br />unit prior to initiating operational actions. Training <br />will be provided and documented by a designated <br />Environmental Service Department Director. <br />2. Each load will run for a minimum of 30 minutes and be <br />maintained at a temperature reading of 280 degrees F. <br />The pressure gauge will read 40 lbs. pressure while <br />in operation. <br />3. All waste to be sterilized will be placed inside the <br />appropriate auto clave bags. The bags must be closed <br />either with a tie or tied closed prior to being placed <br />into the unit. The contents of each bag will not exceed <br />50% fluid as the total volume. <br />4. The sterilizing unit must not be filled beyond 75% maximum <br />capacity for processing each load. <br />5. Environmental Service staff shall be responsible for <br />changing the graph as needed and turn them into the <br />Environmental Office. <br />6. Spore testing will be processed on a monthly basis. The <br />test results will be maintained in the Environmental <br />office. <br />7. A licensed waste hauler will be utilized to provide col- <br />lection/disposal service for off site area's and all <br />sharps. <br />
