Transporting Collected Medical Wast D-8420-50
Revised: 4/07
1. Sharps containers must be placed into a barrel lined with the approved red liner. Once the
barrel is full, the bag must be tied-off and the lid placed securely on the barrel. The facility
identification label is then attached to the outside of the barrel for transportation.
• Larger sized sharps containers approved by the Department of Transportation (DOT)
as shipping containers do not require further secondary containment and can be
labeled for removal providing the top is securely fastened.
2. Used suction canisters should be placed into the smaller barrel lined with the approved red
liner.
• The smaller size barrel is more desirable for stacking and lifting when filled as they
could be too heavy if placed into larger containers.
3. The suction canisters are also to be contained inside the barrel using the red liners provided.
• Stack the used suction canisters into the barrels right-side-up to avoid spillage inside
the barrel. Position them in such a way to maximize the space inside the barrel.
4. Other medical waste in the holding area/cage must always be inside a lined barrel_
Once a barrel is full, the liner is tied shut and the barrel is labeled for transportation.
All fully prepared barrels are moved to the section of the caged area designated for "Ready to
Ship" containers.
Director Approval
km
Name
Signature
REVISED: 11/04
L:\P&P\EOC\D- MEDICAL WASTED-8420-50.doc
Administrative Approval:
, /I a If
34
In
