• <br />• <br />Policy <br />Lodi Health (LH) collects and stores medical waste in compliance with the Medical Waste Management Act of 1976, California <br />Health and Safety Code Sections 117600-118360. Medical waste is kept in the locked Biohazardous Waste Storage Area until <br />transported by the medical waste hauler. <br />Purpose <br />LH maintains storage of medical waste in a safe and secure manner to minimize exposure to patients, visitors, staff, and <br />community. <br />Procedure <br />A. All biohazardous sharps, chemotherapy, pharmaceutical, and RCRA pharmaceutical waste is stored, handled or transported <br />in containers that are leak -resistant, have tight fitting covers and are kept clean and in good repair. <br />B. Biohazard bags and filled sharps containers shall not be stored for more than seven days at a temperature above 32° F. This <br />seven day period begins when any waste is placed into the locked storage area. <br />C. Sharps Containers ready for disposal will not be stored for the than 30 days without the written approval of the enforcement <br />agency. <br />D. The interim storage area for medical waste that is stored prior to the designated accumulation area, as defined in Section <br />118310 of the MMWA shall be stored in an area that is either locked or under direction, supervision or surveillance. <br />Intermediate storage areas shall be marked with the international biohazardous symbol or the signage as described in E. <br />below. These signs shall be readily legible from a distance of five feet. <br />E. The designated accumulation area for storage of medical waste containers prior to transportation or treatment shall be <br />secured so as to deny access to unauthorized persons and shall be marked with warning signs on, or adjacent to, the exterior <br />of entry doors, gates, or lids. The wording of warning signs shall be as follows: <br />English: "CAUTION — BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE STORAGE AREA — UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS KEEP OUT", and <br />Spanish: "CU IDADO —ZONA DE RES IDUOS BIOLOGICOS PELIGROSOS — PROHIBIDA LA ENTRADA A <br />PERSONAS NO AUTORIZADAS". <br />These warning signs shall be readily legible during daylight from a distance of 25 feet. <br />F.
