POLICY <br />It is the policy of Lodi Memorial Hospital that Environmental Services Technicians are trained in the <br />appropriate measures for collection of medical waste prior to being scheduled to perform such duties. <br />II. PURPOSE <br />To protect those hospital employees who are authorized to handle medical waste. <br />III. PROCEDURE <br />A. Documentation of the orientation and training of these employees is kept on file in the Environmental <br />Services office. <br />B. Always use the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during collection or handling of medical <br />waste, including the use of fluid -proof gloves, cover coat and face shield when there may be a risk of <br />splashing the face as during the clean-up of a spill. <br />C. Medical waste is removed from the source of generation by nursing and then placed into collection <br />tubs located inside dirty utility rooms at each facility to be collected by Environmental Services <br />Technicians. <br />D. Sharps containers are exchanged for an empty one. The filled container is then placed into the "Sharps <br />Containers Only" collection tub in dirty utility rooms to be collected by Environmental Services <br />Technicians. <br />E.
