t 0 <br />D. Department managers are responsible for orienting new employees to the department and as <br />appropriate, to job and task specific uses of hazardous materials or waste. Where necessary, <br />the Safety Officer/ Facilities Manager assists the department directors in developing department <br />specific programs or policies. <br />E. Individual personnel are responsible for learning and following job and task specific procedures <br />for safe handling and use of hazardous materials and waste. <br />VI. PROCESSES OF THE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS AND WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN <br />A. SELECTION <br />The manager of each department with an inventory of hazardous materials is responsible for <br />managing the safe storage, handling, use and disposal of them. Each department manager is <br />responsible for evaluating Material Safety Data Sheets for hazards before purchase of <br />departmental supplies. Department managers are responsible for working with the Safety <br />Officer/Facilities Manager to develop procedures for handling of hazardous materials. <br />The manager of each department with an inventory of hazardous materials or regulated waste <br />is responsible for managing the safe storage and handling of them. Each manager is <br />responsible for reviewing Material Safety Data Sheets to identify appropriate disposal methods. <br />The Safety Officer/ Facilities Manager, Environmental Services Manager and the Radiation Safety <br />Officer share responsibility for the disposal of hazardous wastes. Chemical, chemotherapeutic <br />and medical waste is transported by contracted companies. Radioactive waste is allowed to <br />decay below background radiation in a hot room and then is disposed as ordinary waste. <br />INVENTORY <br />The manager of each department handling hazardous materials is responsible for managing the <br />inventory and for performing an evaluation of products to identify hazards. The findings are <br />communicated to departmental staff who will be impacted by the product and to the Safety <br />Officer. Each department manager is responsible for maintaining the departmental inventory of <br />Hazardous Materials. Facilities Management maintains a master inventory list. All department <br />inventories are updated at least annually. <br />C. WASTE HANDLING <br />The Safety Officer/ Facilities Manager is responsible for managing hazardous and regulated <br />waste steams. The wastes generated by San Joaquin General Hospital include general, <br />chemical, chemotherapeutic, radioactive, medical waste and pharmaceutical waste. <br />Facilities Management, Environmental Services, Laboratory, Pharmacy, and Diagnostic Imaging <br />departments generate the majority of regulated hazardous waste in the hospital. The Safety <br />Officer/Facilities Manager is responsible for developing procedures for handling hazardous <br />waste and medical waste. Department managers are responsible for enforcing these <br />procedures. <br />San Joaquin General Hospital maintains facilities where waste is sterilized before disposal in <br />regular waste stream. An exterior storage area is provided for medical waste at the facility. A <br />hot room is provided for decay of radioactive waste. <br />D. SPACE MANAGEMENT <br />The Facilities Manager and Hospital Director are responsible for managing the program for <br />providing space for handling storage of hazardous materials and wastes. The appropriateness <br />of space is evaluated annually with findings included in the routine report to Safety Committee. <br />The appropriateness of space for handling and storage of hazardous material and wastes is also <br />evaluated as part of the hazard surveillance program.
