C]
11
Section 8.0E STERILIZERS Page 2.
Gravity displacement sterilizers are located in the Operating Room and in Family
and Maternity Center. The Gravity displacement sterilizers are used to sterilize
individual items needed for immediate surgical procedures.
There are two types of low temperature steam sterilizers used to sterilize heat
sensitive items. The Sterrad System uses Hydrogen Peroxide Gas as the sterilant
and this sterilizer is located in the Sterile Processing Department. There are
several Steris Sterilizers in the hospital, which use Paracetic acid as the sterilant.
The Steris system is a just in time sterilization process mainly used in the Surgery
department and in the GI Lab.
Dental Clinic use a tabletop steam sterilizer which works very similar to the
Gravity displacement sterilizers. The small tabletop sterilizer is convenient for the
clinic to reprocess dental instruments in between patients.
2. Packaging Items For Sterilization
Hazardous Waste
For effective sterilization of products the sterilant must contact all surfaces of the
items in a load. To ensure that sterilization is achieved Autoclave loads must be
packaged and loaded appropriately.
-The infectious waste generated throughout the hospital is placed into red
biohazard bags. Only red biohazard bags must be sterilized, no other colored bags
must be placed into the sterilizer.
-The Infectious waste Autoclave cart must be lined with a sterilization cart liner.
-The red biohazard waste bags that are collected from the hospital departments are
to be placed into the lined Autoclave carts.
-The Red bags must be placed loosely into the Autoclave cart and not compacted
so steam can penetrate into every bag.
-Other items that may be required to be sterilized for disposal are mattress pads;
these too must be placed into a sterilization cart liner.
