Section 8.0E STERILIZERS Page 5.
safe to process. A separate logbook is to be kept to record the Biological Indicator
test results. (See attached).
In the occurrence of a positive Biological Indicator result the Autoclave load
should be quarantined and the Engineering department notified. The Autoclave
should be marked with a `Do Not Use' sign and no loads should be processed
until Engineering Department have serviced the machine. There must be a
negative growth Biological Indicator achieved before the Autoclave is released
for use.
* Preventative Maintenance
The Engineering Department is responsible for regular preventative maintenance
checks on the Autoclave. The tests may be performed by the trained Engineers or
contracted out to the Autoclave manufacturers. The temperature controls, time
control, steam valves, traps and electrical components must all be maintained for
the sterilization cycles to run effectively.
6. Health & Safety
Wearing Protective Attire
When handling infectious waste staff must wear gloves and a cover gown.
On completion of a sterilization load the contents must be allowed to cool whilst
in the Autoclave chamber for at least 15mins. The Autoclave chamber door can be
opened during the cooling period.
When removing items from the Autoclave it is suggested that safety goggles be
worn especially when removing and crushing the Biological vials for incubation.
Protective gloves must be worn when removing the carts from the Autoclave
chamber; these gloves must be long enough to cover to the elbows.
Body Mechanics
The infectious waste carts are large, bulky and heavy. It is important to remember
proper body mechanics when pulling and pushing these carts in and out of the
Autoclave chamber.
Load must be close to the body at all times.
Use leg muscles and do not strain the back when handling heavy loads.
Do not twist back when pushing or pulling the carts.
