' • INFECTIOUS MATERIAL � • <br />Ac�l <br />CONTAINMENT AND DISPOSAL <br />I. Spills in Microbiology areas: <br />A. All spills of infectious material will be contained and <br />decontaminated. <br />B. General Microbiology areas: <br />1. Flood spill area with 3% ophene• <br />2. Place paper towels over the area. <br />3. Let stand 10-15 minutes. <br />4. Clean the area and autoclave the paper towels. <br />C. Spills in TB Room, especially hood. <br />1. Follow above procedure. <br />2. After flooding allow to stand for 30 minutes. <br />3. Leave hood fan running and evacuate room for this 30 <br />minutes. <br />II. Housekeeping procedure in Microbiology: <br />A. Clean area daily with 3"/. a (If this leaves sticky <br />film follow <br />with 70% alcohol). <br />B. Place clean paper on all work areas daily. Dispose of old paper into <br />wastepaper baskets. If spills have occurred they should be decontaminated <br />as in I.A. <br />III. Housekeeping procedure in Mycobacteriology laboratory: <br />A. To be done by a laboratory maid once a week or more often, if necessary. <br />B. Please wear a mask and a gown before entering the room. <br />C. Clean the floor by using a wet mop (water should contain 3% ophene). <br />D. Clean with 3% opo.hen followed by 70% alcohol the following: <br />1. the surface of the counters. <br />2. the surface of the refrigeratcr an'" incubators. <br />3. the centrifuge inside and outside. <br />4. glass window. <br />5. the surface of the hood. <br />,IV. Spills in other areas involving serum, urine, or other body fluids: <br />A. Flood areas with 25% Clorox. <br />B. Cover with paper towels. <br />C. Allow to stand 5-10 minutes. <br />D. Autoclave paper towels. <br />V. General housekeeping other areas: <br />A. Table tops will be cleaned daily with 25% Clorox to lessen hepatitis <br />contamination. <br />VI. Prevention of aerosols: <br />A. Use care in removing stoppers from tubes of blood or covers from <br />containers of biological fluids. <br />A, <br />1cke4 <br />
