All San Joaquin General Hospital <br />employees, including volunteers, who use or handle hazardous materials, are responsible to <br />immediately carry out this policy whenever there is a release of hazardous materials which have <br />the risk or potential risk to human health or environment. <br />Procedures will be delineated for incidental (minor) spills, and those requiring emergency <br />response from contracted external agencies. <br />Purpose <br />To define the responsibilities and actions to be taken in the event of a spill, which may present a <br />hazard to staff or patients. <br />Procedure <br />Upon discovery of a hazardous material spill, staff will immediately do the following: <br />1. The staff will employ the SIN procedure (Safety, Isolate, and Notify). <br />Safety- Safety of the staff and patients is priority. If possible, remove <br />patients from immediate area. <br />Isolate- Isolate the spill. Close the doors block area and deny entry to <br />unnecessary personnel <br />Notify- Notify others in the area that a spill has occurred. Use the nearest <br />telephone or direct any available staff to dial #99 to contact the <br />operator and report a "Code Orange". Provide the following <br />information: <br />a. Type of spill (if known) <br />b. Location of the spill <br />c. Any injuries or fire <br />d. Your name and extension where you are calling from <br />2. The Operator will notify the Central Plant personnel to divert the ventilation <br />system serving the area, and announce "Code Orange" and location of the spill on <br />the overhead paging system. The following personnel will be paged to be notified <br />of the spill <br />a. Engineering Director <br />b. House Supervisor <br />c. Housekeeping Supervisor <br />d. Emergency Preparedness Coordinator <br />3. The staff will report the spill to the Department Manager or House Supervisor <br />immediately. The Department Manager or House Supervisor will assume the role <br />
