E <br />11 <br />SAN JOAQUIN <br />GENERAL HOSPITAL <br />Department Administration <br />Page 6 of 17 <br />Effective Date December 2008 <br />Date Replaces July 2007 <br />Title of Policy/Procedure Hazardous Materials and Waste <br />Extremely hazardous waste with a high risk of creating an inhalation hazard must be placed <br />within secured secondary containment compatible with the chemical. <br />Containers of hazardous wastes are to be kept closed at all times except when hazardous <br />waste is actually being added to the container. <br />Empty Hazardous Material Container agement: <br />Empty containers as defined below must be managed according to Table 1. At no time should <br />full or partially full containers, or containers that do not comply with these instructions be placed <br />in the regular trash. <br />Liquid hazardous material containers — No liquid can drain from it when tilted in any direction. <br />Solid hazardous material containers (powder, sludge, grease, thick resin, crystals, etc.) — The <br />walls of the container cannot contain any adhered or encrusted materials. The labels should be directly affixed to the <br />container or, in the case of containers too small to which a label may be directly applied, <br />attached to a tag that is then wired or tied by string to the container.
