El <br />SAN JOAQUIN <br />GENERAL HOSPITAL- <br />Department Administration <br />Page 12 of 17 <br />Effective Date December 2008 <br />Date Replaces July 2007 <br />Title of Policy/Procedure Hazardous Materials and Waste <br />Container <br />Any enclosure that is open or closed, and or stationary, in which a material can be stored, <br />handled, treated, or disposed of. <br />Corrosive <br />Any substance which in contact with living tissue will cause destruction of tissue by chemical <br />action, but shall not refer to action on inanimate surfaces. <br />CUPA <br />Certified Unified Program Agency. <br />Disposal <br />To abandon, deposit, inter or otherwise discard waste as a final action after use has been <br />achieved or a use is no longer intended. <br />Disposal Site <br />The location where any final deposition of hazardous waste occurs. <br />DTSC <br />Department of Toxic Substances Control. <br />EPA <br />Environmental Protection Agency. <br />Extremely Hazardous Material <br />Any substance or mixture of substances which, if human exposure should occur, may likely <br />result in death, disabling personal injury or illness because of the quantity, concentration or <br />chemical characteristics of the substance or mixture of substances. <br />Extremely Hazardous Waste <br />Any hazardous waste or mixture of hazardous wastes which, if human exposure should occur, <br />may likely result in death, disabling personal injury or illness because of the quantity, <br />concentration or chemical characteristics of the hazardous waste or mixture of hazardous <br />wastes. <br />Generator <br />A person who generates a waste material. <br />Handling <br />The transporting from one place to another, loading, unloading, pumping or packaging of waste. <br />Handling does not include the management of any substance before it becomes a waste or the <br />storage of a hazardous waste on County property. <br />Hazardous Material <br />
