UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS (BSI)
c. Cleaninq and Decontaminating Spills of Blood or Other Body Fluids
4.
Chemical germicides that are approved for use as "hospital
disinfectants" that are tuberculocidal when used at recommended
dilutions can be used to decontaminate spills of blood and other body
fluids. In patient care areas, visible material should first be
removed and then the area should a decontaminated. With large spills
of cultured or concentrated infectious agents in the laboratory, the
contaminated area should be flooded with a liquid germicide before
cleaning, then decontaninated with fresh germicidal chemical. In both
settings, Body -Fluid Precautions will be observed during the cleaning
and decontaminating procedures.
d. Laundry
Although soiled linen has been identified as a source of large numbers
of certain, pathogenic microorganisms, the risk of actual disease
transmission is negligible. Soiled linen should be handled as little
as possible and with ninimura agitation to prevent gross microbial
contar.,ination of the air and of persons handling the linen. All soiled
linen will be bagged at the location where it was used; it will not be
sorted or rinsed in patient care areas. Linen soiled with blood or
body fluids will be placed and transported in bags that prevent
leakage. Water-soluble bags are no longer required. Soiled linen will
be placed in a plastic bag and adequately sealed to contain the linen.
When a bag is no more than 2/3 full, it is to be tied securely, closed,
and put down .linen chute.
All linen will be considered infectious and handled accoreingiy by all
laundry pr' sonnel, including the transport per
and hospital linen
service personnel. Gloves and other protective garb, as necessary,
shall be worn.
All linen shall be stored in covered linen hampers.
e. Infectious Waste
Hospital waste that requires special handling includes, but is not
limited to:
1) Pathological and surgical waste
2) Clinical and other biological waste
3) Sharps
4) Hunan dialysis waste materials including arterial lines and
dialyzate
5) Fluid filled containers
6) Blood/blood products
Infectious waste must be double -bagged in red plastic bags in
compliance with California Health and Safety Code 25117.5.
