ST. DO 1 1HOSPITAL <br /> HOUSE KEEMG SERVICES <br /> POLICIES AND PROCEDURES <br /> HANDLING OF PATHOLOGIC WASTE <br /> I. POLICY <br /> Pathologic specimens shall be collected and disposed of in such a manner as <br /> to prevent contamination of personnel and the community. <br /> 11. PURPOSE <br /> A. To insure appropriate procedure for collecting and disposing of infectious <br /> waste. <br /> B. To prevent contamination of hospital personnel working with pathologic <br /> specimens. <br /> Ill. PROCEDURE <br /> A. Specimens <br /> 1. All blood, body fluids, stool, ), and urine shall be handled as <br /> contaminated. <br /> 2. No mouth pipetting is permitted in the laboratory. <br /> 3. Fungus, Pasteurella, Brucella, Psittacosis, and tuberculosis cultures <br /> must be inoculated and handled only in a biologic hood. <br /> 4. Any spills of body fluffs shall be flooded immediately with LpH <br /> (Vestal Laboratories), then wiped up with a disposable cloth. <br /> 5. Pathologic specimens are considered infectious waste. Tissue <br /> wastes shall be fixed and stored in glass jars with formalin. After <br /> use, they shall be transported for incineration. Amputation <br /> specimens shall be plastic-bagged, paper:wrapped, and then put into <br /> a cardboard box. These specimens shall then be transported for <br /> incineration. <br /> B. Personnel <br /> 1. Personnel shall not eat, smoke or drink while in the Lab or Morgue. <br /> 2. Personnel shall wash their hands before entering and leaving Lab or <br /> Morgue. <br />
