The NIOSI4 document, "Selecting,Evaluating,and Using Sharps Disposal Containers," <br /> recommends that the tops of sharps containers be located at the following distances above the <br /> floor: <br /> • For s standing workstation(Ex: wall mounted in shower room)=52-56 inches above the <br /> floor <br /> • For a seated workstation=38-42 inches above the floor <br /> When Movinz Containers <br /> When moving containers of contaminated sharps from the area of use,the containers shall be: <br /> • Closed immediately prior to removal or replacement to prevent spillage or protusion of <br /> contents during handling, storage,transport or shipping <br /> • Placed in secondary container if leakage is possible <br /> The second container shall be: <br /> • Closeable <br /> • Constructed to contain all contents and prevent leakage during handling,storage,transport, <br /> or shipping <br /> • Labeled or color-coded according to the standard <br /> Reusable Containers <br /> Reusable containers shall not be opened,emptied,or cleaned manually or in any other manner than <br /> would expose employees to the risk of percutaneous injury. <br /> Regulated Waste Containment <br /> Regulated waste shall be placed in containers that are: <br /> • Closeable <br /> • Constructed to contain all contents and prevent leakage of fluids during handling,storage, <br /> transport,or shipping <br /> • Labeled or color-coded <br /> • Closed prior to removal to prevent spillage or protrusion of contents during handling, <br /> storage,transport,or shipping <br /> Version#: 1 Page 2 of 5 <br />
