MEDICAL WASTE - Continued <br />Policy This facility will handle and dispose of medical waste in a <br />manner as to protect the staff, residents and community. <br />Procedure Use the following procedure in reference to medical waste. <br />For Medical <br />Waste <br />STEP ACTION <br />1 Personnel involved in the handling and disposal of <br />medical infectious waste will be informed of the <br />potential health and safety hazard and trained in <br />appropriate handling and disposal methods. <br />If processing and/or disposal facilities are not <br />available at the site of generation, the waste will <br />be safely transported in sealed impervios containers <br />to another site for appropriate disposal according <br />to state laws. <br />3 Medical waste awaiting terminal processing will be <br />sorted in an area accessible only to authorized <br />personnel trained to handle the disposal process. <br />4 Disposable needles and syringes will not be recap- <br />ped, bent or broken and will he placed intact with <br />other sharps in puncture resistant containers <br />located as close to the area in which they are used <br />as possible. When the container is 3/4 full, it <br />will be disposed of with medical waste. <br />Specific management plan for on-site handling and <br />storage while waiting terminal processing and <br />pick-up by waste disposal company will be written <br />by the facility in accordance with the state laws. <br />A specific management plan will be placed in the <br />Infection Control Manual following this policy and <br />nrocedure. <br />Page 5 <br />
