Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan\ 3, µ
livingcenters
Standard (Universal) Precautions
Policy It is the policy of FACILITY NAME that standard (universal) precautions shall
be observed to prevent contact with blood or other potentially infectious
materials. Under circumstances in which differentiation between body fluid
types is difficult or impossible, all body fluids shall be considered potentially
infectious materials and barriers will be used to prevent exposure. In addition,
any isolation precautions that may be required will be appropriately initiated.
Purpose Standard (universal) precautions are instituted to ensure that blood/body
fluids and other potentially infectious materials are handled appropriately.
Definition —
Moist body substances, recognized or unrecognized, are defined as:
Moist body
Blood or any body fluid, whether or not it contains visible blood
substances
• Non -intact skin
• Mucous membrane
Visitors
No extraordinary barriers are necessary for visitors unless they are actively
(barriers)
involved in the patient's/resident's care. If visitors participate in the
patient's/resident's care, appropriate barriers will be used.
Barriers Barriers indicated in standard (universal) precautions are:
• Handwashing
• Gloves
• Masks
• Gowns
• Eye wear (goggles, face shields, etc.)
Note: Gloves, gowns, masks and eye coverings will be worn if there is
contact with visible blood/body fluids or if there are potentially infectious
fluids or the risk of splash or splatter.
General All patients/residents will be cared for in conformance with CDC/OSHA
guidelines guidelines of standard (universal) precautions.
"Standard (universal) precautions," door signs and isolation markers
will not be needed.
However, implementation of standard (universal) precautions "facility wide"
does not eliminate the need for isolation precautions (e.g., infectious diarrhea,
tuberculosis), and these patient/resident rooms must have door signs that
alert visitors and others to report to the nurses' station before entering
patient's/resident's rooms.
Safety & Loss Infection Control Policy and Procedure Manual
Control Department '0 2007 Golden Living (Revised October 2I# 11) Page 10 of 51
