Dispose.;of Cnnrcnnmctret'.Siun n, <br /> Disposal of Contaminated Sharps <br /> Highlights Police Statement <br /> This facility shall discard contaminated sharps into designated containers. <br /> I <br /> Police Interpretation and Implementation <br /> Contaminated Sharps I 1. Whoever uses contaminated sharps will discard them immediately or as soon as <br /> feasible into designated containers. <br /> Contaminated Sharps 2. Contaminated sharps will be discarded into containers that are: <br /> Container <br /> a. Closable; <br /> b. Puncture resistant: <br /> c. Leakproof on sides and bottom; <br /> d. Labeled or color-coded in accordance with our established labeline system <br /> (Note: See the policy entitled Biohazard Labeling in the chapter entitled <br /> Infection Control.); and <br /> e. Impermeable and capable of maintaining impermeability through final waste <br /> disposal. <br /> Location of Sharps Container 3. During use,containers for contaminated sharps will be handled as follows: <br /> a. Designated individuals will ensure that the containers are easily accessible to <br /> employees and located as close as feasible to the immediate area where sharps <br /> are used or can be reasonably anticipated to be found; <br /> b. Nursing staff will ensure that the containers are maintained in an upright <br /> position throughout use;and <br /> c. Designated individuals will be responsible for sealing and replacing containers <br /> when they are 75% to 80% full to protect employees from punctures and/or <br /> needlesticks when attempting to push sharps into the container. <br /> Moving Sharps Container 4. When moving containers of contaminated sharps from the area of use, employees <br /> must: <br /> a. Close the container immediately prior to removal or replacement to prevent <br /> spillage or protrusion of contents during handling, storage, transport, or <br /> shipping; <br /> b. Place the container in a secondary container if leakage is possible: and <br /> c. If a second container is used, it must be: <br /> 1. Closable: <br /> 2. Constructed to contain all contents and prevent leakage during handling. <br /> storage,transport, or shipping,. and <br /> 3. Labeled or color-coded according to established policies governing the <br /> labeling of containers. <br /> d.
