MANUAL TITLE: LTC Center's Pharmacy Policy and Procedure Manual <br /> POLICY#/TITLE: 9.2 Medication Disposal/Destruction <br /> APPLICATION: LTC Centers Receiving Pharmacy Services from NeighborCare <br /> EFFECTIVE DATE: 08/01/02 <br /> REVISION DATE: <br /> PAGES: 1 of 2 <br /> POLICY <br /> The Center adheres to all federal, state and local regulations regarding drug destruction <br /> when discarding any medication and medical waste. <br /> PURPOSE <br /> 1. To safely, legally, and properly dispose of all outdated or unwanted controlled <br /> substances. <br /> 2. To ensure that controlled substances are not diverted. <br /> 3. To comply with state and federal DEA regulations. <br /> PROCESS <br /> 1. Non-Controlled Medications: <br /> 1.1 The Center may utilize a reverse distributor or waste management agency to <br /> dispose of/destroy all medication and medical waste. OR <br /> 1.2 Dependent on state regulations, non-controlled medications may be destroyed <br /> by two (2)licensed professionals from the Center or a pharmacist and <br /> licensed professional from the Center. <br /> 2. Controlled Substance Medications: <br /> :2.1 Federal and State regulations do not permit the return of a customer's <br /> controlled drugs to the pharmacy. <br /> 2.2 Remaining or discontinued controlled substances are stored under the <br /> supervision of the director of nursing services until destruction. <br /> 2.3 Schedule II Controlled Substances <br /> 2.3.1 Are disposed of in accordance with state and federal regulations in <br /> the Center by a licensed nurse and consultant pharmacist. <br />
