POLICY and PROCEDUW <br /> FACIUTY.* FOUCY NUMBER: <br /> LODI HEALTH CARE CENTER <br /> DATE EFFECTIVE- DATE REVISED: <br /> SUBJECT: INFECTIOUS WASTE <br /> POLICY: To provide a sanitary method of containment <br /> and disposal of infectious waste. <br /> DEFINITION: Infectious waste is any substance which may <br /> harbor or transmit pathogenic - organisms. <br /> These are: <br /> 1 . All tissues, specimens or blood elements, <br /> excreta and secretions obtained from <br /> residents. <br /> 2. Any disposable product that comes in <br /> contact with the resident. <br /> 3 . Equipment, instruments, utensils, and <br /> fomites of a disposable nature, from <br /> the rooms of patients with suspected <br /> or diagnosed communicable disease re- <br /> quiring isolation. <br /> STORAGE: 1 . White garbage cans labeled "INFECTIOUS <br /> WASTE" are located in each utility room. <br /> They are lined with red plastic bags <br /> marked infectious waste. They are se- <br /> curely tied and deposited in the designated <br /> storage area on Station II daily by the <br /> Housekeeping Staf f . The cans are washed <br /> daily with a germicidal agent by the <br /> Housekeeping. Staf f <br /> 2. The designated infectious waste storage <br /> area is located on Hall V, Station II. <br /> This locked room is identified by the red <br /> and white sign which reads in English and <br /> Spanish: "CAUTION - INFECTIqUS WASTE <br /> STORAGE AREA, UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS KEEP <br /> OUT. " This room contains plastic garbage <br /> bins supplied by the Bingham Company <br /> which are lined with red plastic bags <br /> marked "INFECTIOUS WASTE. " <br /> PROCEDURE: 1 . All infectious waste will be put into a <br /> red plastic bag at the bedside as <br /> generated. <br />
