i <br /> i <br /> Waste DisposalDisruption ° <br /> cy & Procedure <br /> Purpose: In the event that the facility's standard means of waste <br /> disposal is interrupted, it is important that staff know how to respond <br /> in such a situation. For the facility to function in a safe and sanitary <br /> manner, responsible handling of all waste is crucial. <br /> It is important that nursing personnel are able to ensure that <br /> Potential hazards from waste are correctly assessed and identified. <br /> Appropriate measure must then be taken to protect the health and <br /> safety of those who may come into contact with the waste. <br /> Procedures: <br /> in the event that service by any of the facility's waste treatment <br /> and/or transporter contractors is interrupted for any reason, the <br /> following actions would be implemented: <br /> I . Determine when regular service from regular transport and <br /> treatment contractor can be resumed. Inquire if contractor has <br /> alternative transportation, storage and disposal plan that can <br /> be implemented. <br /> 2. Notify the Department of Public Health of the service <br /> interruption and what actions will be taken. <br /> If the contractor cannot provide services within a reasonable time, <br /> then the following actions will be implemented: <br /> I . Attempt to secure the services of an alternate contractor who <br /> may be able to transport and dispose of waste until regular <br /> service is restored. <br /> 2. Transport waste only in vehicles with isolated cabs, and which <br /> comply with Department of Transportation regulations. <br /> *Staff members who handle biological and/or medical waste are <br /> trained regarding personal protection and safety, and proper <br /> containment and labeling. This training focuses on staff members <br /> who (1 ) handle medical waste from the point-of-generation at the <br /> bedside, (2) transport the waste, and (3) prepare the waste for <br /> sterilization or transport by contractor. Training includes bloodborne <br /> pathogen safety. <br /> Disclaimer: It is important to note that each situation Is going to be <br /> different, and that a situation may not allow for the above procedures to <br /> be implermented in this specific order. <br />
