i
i
Waste DisposalDisruption °
cy & Procedure
Purpose: In the event that the facility's standard means of waste
disposal is interrupted, it is important that staff know how to respond
in such a situation. For the facility to function in a safe and sanitary
manner, responsible handling of all waste is crucial.
It is important that nursing personnel are able to ensure that
Potential hazards from waste are correctly assessed and identified.
Appropriate measure must then be taken to protect the health and
safety of those who may come into contact with the waste.
Procedures:
in the event that service by any of the facility's waste treatment
and/or transporter contractors is interrupted for any reason, the
following actions would be implemented:
I . Determine when regular service from regular transport and
treatment contractor can be resumed. Inquire if contractor has
alternative transportation, storage and disposal plan that can
be implemented.
2. Notify the Department of Public Health of the service
interruption and what actions will be taken.
If the contractor cannot provide services within a reasonable time,
then the following actions will be implemented:
I . Attempt to secure the services of an alternate contractor who
may be able to transport and dispose of waste until regular
service is restored.
2. Transport waste only in vehicles with isolated cabs, and which
comply with Department of Transportation regulations.
*Staff members who handle biological and/or medical waste are
trained regarding personal protection and safety, and proper
containment and labeling. This training focuses on staff members
who (1 ) handle medical waste from the point-of-generation at the
bedside, (2) transport the waste, and (3) prepare the waste for
sterilization or transport by contractor. Training includes bloodborne
pathogen safety.
Disclaimer: It is important to note that each situation Is going to be
different, and that a situation may not allow for the above procedures to
be implermented in this specific order.
