CONTROL OF STAPHYLOCOCCAL INFECTIONS <br /> GENE D® <br /> 1 ® Staphylococcal infection is usually not contagious to <br /> others when proper aseptic techniques and procedures are fol- <br /> lowed, Of particular importance is the proper washing of hands <br /> afore and after caring for an infected patient® <br /> 2, Patients particularly susceptible to infection are <br /> those who are on immune suppressive agents such as the cortico <br /> steroids, and those with diseases such as leukemia or diabetes® <br /> POLICY: <br /> In order to control the spread of staphylococcal infection the <br /> following procedures will be followed® <br /> 1 If the nursing home facility has a patient within the <br /> facility that develops a staphylococcal infection, such as <br /> draining pressure areav the facility will follow the guidelines <br /> for isolation techniques for use in hospitals. <br /> 2® Discharge planning will include verification whether <br /> patient has a draining wound that might bea source of infec- <br /> tion. <br /> 3. Draining wounds will be cultured to determine whether <br /> an infecting agent is present, and to identify the agent if <br /> present® <br /> 4® Dressings and other materials which have been in contact <br /> with draining wounds or lesions shall be disposed of as "infectious <br /> waste"® <br /> /U <br />
