ENTERIC PRECAUTIONS .EuLpose: To prevent the spread of disease that can be trans- 4nitted by direct or indirect contact with infected feces and urine and in some instancesq heavily contaminated articles. Trans- mission of infection depends on ingestion of the pathogen. Visitors - Report to nurses station before entering room. Private Room - Not necessary* Gowns - Must be worn by all persons having contact with the patient or ® s excretions. Masks - not necessary. Hands - Must be washed on entering and leaving the room and as indicated during patient care® Gloves - Must be worn by all persons having direct contact with the patient or with potentially contaminated objects, such as urinals, bedpans, and commodes. E; P® cuffs and stethesc ® No special precautions unless con- taminated by excretion® Wipe stethescope with germicidal solu- tion, Wash B,P. cuff with germicidal solution. Needles and s Ines - Use disposables® Use special precautions with viral hepatitis. Dispose of needles in "Sharps Discard" containery syringes in waste basket® DressinCs and tissues - Should be double plastic bagged, closed securely and discarded. Urine and feces - Flush directly down the toilet® Utensile cleaned and replaced at patient's bedside. Patient must wash his hands after using toilet facilities. When enteric precautions are discontinued utensils are to be double bagged, disinfected and sterilized, I Thermometers - Thermometer and container should be kept at bedside. Dishes - Use disposable dishes, left over food should be wrapped and discarded in wastebasket, inking water ® No special precautions. Laboratory specimens 1 . Specimens (urinev feces) should be placed in clear plastic container and labeled "contaminated" or "isolation" to alert laboratory personnel.
