ENTERIC PRECAUTIONS <br /> .EuLpose: To prevent the spread of disease that can be trans- <br /> 4nitted by direct or indirect contact with infected feces and urine <br /> and in some instancesq heavily contaminated articles. Trans- <br /> mission of infection depends on ingestion of the pathogen. <br /> Visitors - Report to nurses station before entering room. <br /> Private Room - Not necessary* <br /> Gowns - Must be worn by all persons having contact with the <br /> patient or ® s excretions. <br /> Masks - not necessary. <br /> Hands - Must be washed on entering and leaving the room and as <br /> indicated during patient care® <br /> Gloves - Must be worn by all persons having direct contact with <br /> the patient or with potentially contaminated objects, such as <br /> urinals, bedpans, and commodes. <br /> E; <br /> P® cuffs and stethesc ® No special precautions unless con- <br /> taminated by excretion® Wipe stethescope with germicidal solu- <br /> tion, Wash B,P. cuff with germicidal solution. <br /> Needles and s Ines - Use disposables® Use special precautions <br /> with viral hepatitis. Dispose of needles in "Sharps Discard" <br /> containery syringes in waste basket® <br /> DressinCs and tissues - Should be double plastic bagged, closed <br /> securely and discarded. <br /> Urine and feces - Flush directly down the toilet® Utensile <br /> cleaned and replaced at patient's bedside. Patient must wash <br /> his hands after using toilet facilities. When enteric precautions <br /> are discontinued utensils are to be double bagged, disinfected and <br /> sterilized, I <br /> Thermometers - Thermometer and container should be kept at bedside. <br /> Dishes - Use disposable dishes, left over food should be wrapped <br /> and discarded in wastebasket, <br /> inking water ® No special precautions. <br /> Laboratory specimens <br /> 1 . Specimens (urinev feces) should be placed in clear <br /> plastic container and labeled "contaminated" or <br /> "isolation" to alert laboratory personnel. <br />
