0 <br /> POLICY and PROCEDURE <br /> FACIUTY: UCY NUMBER: <br /> til« DELTK VALLEY CONVALESCENT HOSPITAL <br /> DATE EFFECTIVE: DATE REVISED: <br /> March 29, 1985 i` <br /> SUBJECT: DISPOSAL OF INFECTIOUS WASTES <br /> POLICY: G. <br /> The policy of this facility in compliance with Section 66840 of the <br /> State of California Department of Health Service's infectious waste <br /> regulations is as follows: <br /> In an effort to prevent the spread of infection, infectious waste <br /> shall be contained in a manner and location which affords protection <br /> from animals, rain, and wind and does not provide a breeding place <br /> or a food source for insects or rodents. <br /> Infectious waste shall be segregated from other waste at the point <br /> of origin in the producing facility. <br /> EQUIPMENT: <br /> A plastic barrel in the utility area in central hall across from <br /> from .ftom 14. This room is always locked and is accessible -+oµ `- nurses, administrator and maintenance supervisor only. The <br /> barrel will be clearly marked "infectious wastes" and will be <br /> red in color. Ked ,`S ,fiV4rL,46(_& A. - ours& r c7-A 'en) <br /> Red plastic -bags marked INFECTIOUS WASTES, to line the barrel . <br /> PROCEDURE: <br /> •1 . Containment of infectious waste shall be in the "infectious <br /> wastes" barrel located in the,,tility area in central hall <br /> across from Room 14. The door will be marked in English, <br /> "CAUTION-INFECTIOUS WASTE STORAGE AREA-UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS <br /> KEEP OUT", and in Spanish, "CUIDADO-ZONA DE RESIDUOSSINFECTADOS- <br /> PROHIBIDA LA ENTRADA A PERSONAS NO AUTORIZADAS". This <br /> warning sign will be readily legible during daylight from a <br /> distance of at least 25 feet. This sign will be red and <br /> white in color. <br /> 2. Infectious wastes shall be defined as tissue, blood, drainage, <br /> excreta and catheters, tubing, bags, colostomy equipment, <br /> dressings, and soiled paper towels and kleenes (if for example, <br /> the patient has a contagious respiratory illness and is doing <br /> a lot of coughing and/or expectorating and/or blowing nose). <br /> 3. It is the duty of the charge and/or treatment nurse to assure <br /> that infectious wastes are placed into the labeled red plastic <br /> bags, bagged in another sturdy plastic bag as it is removed <br /> J <br /> /CL <br />
