GUIDELINES AND DEFINITIONS
SKIN IRRITATION: Ratings corresponding to the following definitions are derived from data obtained from the test
methods as described in the 16 CFA 1500.41 and categories of toxicity as described in NAS Publication 1138:
1. Practically Non-irritating:The undiluted product may cause mild or slight irritation (erythema skin reaction
values of 0 or 1) of the intact or abraded skin of rabbits at 72 hours. EPA Category IV.
2. Moderate Irritant:The undiluted product causes moderate irritation (erythema skin reaction values ofrimaril
1 and/or 2) of the intact or abraded skin of rabbits t 72 hours. EPA Category III. p y
3. Severe Irritant:The undiluted product causes severe irritation (erythema skin reaction values of primarily 3 or 4
with or without edema) of the intact or abraded skin of rabbits at 72 hours. EPA Category 11.
4. Corrosive:The undiluted product causes visible destruction, irreversible alterations,or scarring of the tissue
structure at the sight of contact on the intact or abraded skin of rabbits. EPA Category I.
EYE IRRITATION: Ratings corresponding to the following definitions are derived from data obtained from the test i
methods described in the 16 CFR 1500.42 and categories of toxicity as described in NAS Publication 1138:
1. Practically Non-Irritating:The undiluted product, when instilled into the eyes of rabbits, produces minimal J
effects, clearing in less than 24 hours. EPA Category IV. !
2. Moderately Irritating:The undiluted product, when instilled into the eyes of rabbits, produces corneal involve-
ment or irritation, clearing in 7 days or less. EPA Category Ill.
3. Severely Irritating:The undiluted product, when instilled into the eyes of rabbits, produces corneal involvement
or irritation, clearing in 21 days or less. EPA Category ll.
4. Corrosive:The undiluted product, when instilled into the eyes of rabbits, produces irreversible destruction of
ocular tissue or corneal involvement or irritation persisting for more than 21 days. EPA Category I.
ORAL TOXICITY: Ratings corresponding to the following definitions are derived from data obtained from the test
methods as described in the 16 CFR 1500.40 and categories of toxicity as described in 40 CFR 162.10:
1. Non-Toxic: The probable lethal dose of undiluted product to 50%of the test animals determined from ingestion
studies (LD„) is greater than 5 grams per kilogram of body weight. EPA Category IV.
2. Slightly Toxic:The probable lethal dose of undiluted product to 50%of the test animals determined from inges-
tion studies (LD„) is greater than 500 milligrams per kilogram and less than or equal to 5 grams per kilogram of
body weight. EPA Category 111.
' 3. Moderately Toxic:The probable lethal dose of undiluted product to 50%of the tesi animals determined from
ingestion studies (LD„) is greater than 50 milligrams per kilogram and less than or equal to 500 milligrams per
kilogram of body weight. EPA Category IL
4. Very Toxic:The probable lethal dose of the undiluted product to 50%of the test animals determined from inges-
tion studies (LD,) is less than or equal to 50 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. EPA Category I.
-DERMAL TOXICITY: Ratings corresponding to the following definitions are derived from data obtained from the
test methods as described in 16 CFR 1500.40 and categories of toxicity as described in 40 CFR 163.100-4:
1. Non-Toxic:The probable lethal dose of undiluted product to 50%of the test animals determined from dermal
toxicity studies (LD„) is greater than 2 grams per kilogram of body weight with no mortality observed when this
dose is administered. EPA Category IV.
2. Slightly Toxic:The probable lethal dose of undiluted product to 50%of the test animals determined from dermal
toxicity studies (LD„) is greater than 2 grams per kilogram of body weight, although some mortality is observed
at this dose level. EPA Category 111.
3. Moderately Toxic:The probable lethal dose of undiluted product to 50%of the test animals determined from
dermal toxicity studies (LD„) is greater than 200 milligrams and less than or equal to 2 grams per kilogram of
body weight. EPA Category 11.
4. Very Toxic:The probable lethal dose of undiluted product to 50%of the test animals determined from dermal
toxicity studies (LD„) is less than or equal to 200 milligrams per kilogram of body weights. EPA Category I.
INHALATION TOXICITY: Ratings corresponding to the following definitions are derived from categories of toxic-
ity described in 40 CFR 162.10:
1. Non-Toxic:The probable lethal dose of undiluted product to of the test animals determined from inhalation
studies (LC„) is greater than 20 milligrams per liter by volume when inhaled continuously for one hour or less.
EPA Category IV.
2. Mildly Toxic:The probable lethal dose of undiluted product to 50%of the test animals determined from inhala-
tion studies (LC,,,) is greater than 2 milligrams and less than or equal to 20 milligrams per liter by volume when
inhaled continuously for one hour or less. EPA Category 111.
3. Moderately Toxic:The probable lethal dose of undiluted product to 50%of the test animals determined from
r inhalation studies (LC„) is greater than 0.2 milligrams and less than or equal to 2 milligrams per liter by volume
when inhaled continuously for one hour or less. EPA Category 11.
4. Highly Toxic:The probable lethal dose of undiluted product to 50%of the test animals determined from inhala-
tion studies (LC„) is less than or equal to 0.2 milligrams per liter of volume when inhaled continuously for one
hour or less. EPA Category I.
N-1220.
