external contamination (see Attachment I for visual instructions on
packaging RMW). If issues are encountered, please refer to Attachment II
for issue resolution.
6. After packing the RMW container has been completed, staff must tie the
biohazard bag lining the RMW container and secure the top of the container
(see Attachment I for visual instructions). The top must be closed
completely. The exterior must be examined for visible contamination and
disinfected if contamination is found. Finally, staff must confirm that the
container is labeled or marked according to regulations.
7. A contractor's label will be attached to the side of the RMW container
(see Attachment I for example of contractor's label). The date is recorded
on the contractor's label. The sealed container is transported to the RMW
holding area to await pickup by the RMW contractor.
8. Supplies (biohazard containers, plastic biohazard liners, labels etc.) shall
be routinely restocked by the contractor at the time of waste pickup. If
additional usage is anticipated, staff is responsible to notify the vendor in
advance so the appropriate supplies can be delivered.
1. Do not use the sharps container as storage container. Use only for intended
purpose to discard contaminated sharps.
2. Sharps containers shall be provided in each work area where sharps (i.e.
phlebotomy needles, finger stick lancets, glass test tubes or other sharps)
are utilized, including donor, laboratory and sample management areas.
3. Containers shall be made from rigid plastic, be puncture -resistant, leak-
proof, and marked with the biohazard symbol.
4. Each container shall be placed in an easily accessible area of the
workstation.
5. All containers must remain in an upright position.
6. Sharps containers may only be filled 3/4 full or to the fill line if one is
provided on the container.
7. All containers must be closed before removing them from the work area.
American Red Cross Biomedical Services Safety Page 9 of 17
Regulated Medical Waste Program Program # 023
