decontaminated and reused but should be discarded if <br />they are peeling, cracked or discolored, or if they <br />have punctures, tears or other evidence of deterior- <br />ation. <br />Other Personal Protective Equipment <br />Clothing such as laboratory coats or aprons afford some <br />protection against risk of infection, subject to the <br />following conditions: <br />1. Coats should be worn buttoned or snapped closed, <br />and should allow for quick exit in case of a spill. <br />2. Remove lab coats worn at the bench before leaving <br />the laboratory; do not wear them to the lunch room or <br />outside the building. <br />3. Do not launder protective clothing worn in the <br />laboratory or donor areas with domestic articles of <br />clothing. Place soiled coats, aprons, towels etc in <br />the laundry hampers provided by the blood bank. <br />Use of Sharps Containers <br />Gloves and other protective barriers should reduce the <br />incidence of contamination of hands, but they cannot <br />prevent penetrating injuries due to needles or other <br />sharp instruments. <br />TAKE CARE to prevent injuries when using needles and <br />other sharp instruments or devices and when disposing <br />of used needles. DO NOT recap used needles by hand; DO NOT <br />remove used needles from disposable syringes by hand; and <br />DO NOT bend, break or otherwise manipulate used needles by <br />haTd. <br />Place used disposable syringes, needles,lancets, capil- <br />lary tubes, broken glass, and other sharp items in the <br />puncture -resistant Sharps containers for disposal. <br />Keep the Sharps container as close to the use area as <br />is practical. <br />BIOSAFETY - INFCONT - 0491 - PAGE 4 <br />
