Hepatitis B Vaccine Program Page 3 of 4 1000.5 POST-EXPOSURE MANAGEMENT Exposures must be reported immediately after occurrence, to the employee's supervisor. Evaluation and appropriate interventions such as prophylaxis against hepatitis B infection must be initiated promptly to be effective. After an exposure, the following information will be collected on the "Percutaneous Exposure Report", then placed in the employee's personnel record. 1. Date and time of exposure. 2. Job duty being performed by worker at time of exposure. 3. Details of exposure, including amount of fluid, type of fluid or material, and severity of exposure (eg, for a percutaneous exposure, depth of injury and whether fluid was injected; for a skin or mucous membrane exposure, the extent and duration of contact and the condition of the skin, eg, chapped, abraded, intact) 4. Description of source of exposure, including donor number and, if known, whether the source material contained HIV or HBV. 5. Details about counseling, postexposure management, and follow-up. DURING ALL PHASES OF FOLLOW-UP, CONFIDENTIALITY OF THE EMPLOYEE AND THE SOURCE INDIVIDUAL MUST BE PROTECTED! After occupational exposure, both the exposed employee and the source individual should be evaluated to determine the possible need for the exposed person to receive prophylaxis against hepatitis B according to CDC recommendations. At the time of exposure, any susceptible exposed employee who has not been previously vaccinated with HBV vaccine should be offered the vaccine. Hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) may also be indicated, especially if the source individual is found to be positive for HBsAg.
