MedPARTNERS No:
MULLIKIN MEDICAL CENTER -LINCOLN Page 2 of 4
GENERAL POLICY
Date:
SUBJECT: MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN Aug. 18, 1997
7. Any empty containers, tubing or disposable mixing surfaces contaminated with trace
amounts of chemotherapeutic solutions will be disposed in designated chemotherapeutic
waste containers and carried per policy to the medical waste storage area. Empty will be
defined according to section 25050.5 (g)2, "if material was pourable, no material can be
poured or drained from the container or liner when held in any orientation... if material is
not pourable, no material or waste remains in the container or liner that can be feasibly
removed by scraping." Allowable waste will be placed in a medical waste area for
collection and disposal by our current medical waste hauler (see appendix). Any
"pourable" remains must be disposed of separately as "hazardous waste". Please contact
a member of the Safety Committee for assistance.
8. The medical waste storage area is kept locked at all times and has a prominent warning
sign in English - "Caution - Biohazardous Waste Storage Area - Unauthorized Persons
Keep Out", and in Spanish - "Ciudado - Zona de Residous - Biologicos Pehgrosos -
Prohibida la Entrada a Personas no Autorizadas". This area shall be kept clean at all
times.
9. Medical waste will be collected as often as necessary and no less frequently than once a
week. See appendix for the name of the collecting and treating company.
10. Upon collection, the medical waste hauler will leave a receipt that records the number,
type, and tracking identification for the medical waste received. These tracking
documents will be kept with certifications of destruction supplied periodically by the
treating facility. All documents will be kept on site for a minimum of three years.
11. Medical waste mixed with hazardous chemical waste will be disposed as hazardous waste
in c ompliance with state and federal regulations.
12. All employees will be oriented to the proper handling of medical waste upon hiring and
during reorientation or in a department sepcific in-service.
13. The Department of Health Services will be notified if the Medical Waste Management
plan is altered or discontinued.
BLOOD/BODY FLUID SPILL RESPONSE:
In the event of a blood/body fluid spill disposable protective equipment (gloves, gown,
goggles, and mask) will be worn. The spill area will be cleaned and covered with an apporved
disinfectant for a minimum contact time of three minutes. All disinfectants are approved for
use by the Safety Committee and comply with section 25084(b). the current approved
disinfectant is listed in the appendix of this plan. This disinfectant may be safely used on
carpeting, hard flooring, counter tops, and plastics. Material contaminated with blood/body
fluid will be disposed of in available biohazardous bags. If broken glass or other
contaminated sharp objects are present, the material will be collected using a disposable
device similar to a dust pan and brush. Contaminated broken glass will not be picked up by
hand. Contaminated sharp objects will be disposed in red rigid biohazard waste containers.
