Any employee who handles medical waste or pharmaceutical waste must be trained on the <br />proper handling of medical waste. The training provided to staff describes handling, storage, <br />disposal, record keeping of medical waste and the procedure for handling spills or exposures. <br />The training is given during annual Bloodborne Pathogen training. <br />LYMM 14 11 Will.1 i�, •r <br />All medical waste will be collected and stored in the Biohazardous Waste Storage Bin until <br />collection and transport by the contracted medical waste hauler. All biohazardous waste shall <br />be stored, handled or transported in containers that are leak resistant, have tight fitting <br />covers and are kept clean and in good repair. The interim storage area shall be locked and/or <br />under the direct supervision or surveillance. This area shall be marked with warning signs <br />stating in English: <br />"CAUTION <br />BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE STORAGE AREA <br />UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS KEEP OUT," <br />And in Spanish: <br />"CUIDADO—ZONA DE RESIDUOS BIOLOGICOS <br />ra-MC 3iMi31 <br />PROHIBIDA LA ENTRADA A PERSONAS NO AUTORIZADAS." <br />Biohazard bags and filled sharps containers shall not be stored in Biohazardous Waste <br />Storage Bin for more than seven calendar (7) days. <br />The waste hauler is responsible for cleaning all reusable rigid containers that are used for <br />accumulation, transportation and storage of medical waste. The containers shall be washed <br />and decontaminated before returning for use. <br />In the event a spill occurs during transport or storage at SJC Public Health the spill shall be <br />disinfected and cleaned up immediately. The Supervisor shall be notified to determine if <br />there has been an exposure to an employee. The approved method for decontamination is to <br />contain spill with absorbent disposable towels or other absorbent material and then to <br />disinfect with a fresh 1:10 solution of bleach. The solution should be allowed contact with the <br />area for a minimum of 3 minutes. The amount of solution mixed will be no more than can be <br />used at any one time. <br />
