Any employee who handles medical waste or pharmaceutical waste must be trained on the proper handling of medical waste. The training provided to staff describes handling, storage, disposal, record keeping of medical waste and the procedure for handling spills or exposures. The training is given during annual Bloodborne Pathogen training. LYMM 14 11 Will.1 i�, •r All medical waste will be collected and stored in the Biohazardous Waste Storage Bin until collection and transport by the contracted medical waste hauler. All biohazardous waste shall be stored, handled or transported in containers that are leak resistant, have tight fitting covers and are kept clean and in good repair. The interim storage area shall be locked and/or under the direct supervision or surveillance. This area shall be marked with warning signs stating in English: "CAUTION BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE STORAGE AREA UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS KEEP OUT," And in Spanish: "CUIDADO—ZONA DE RESIDUOS BIOLOGICOS ra-MC 3iMi31 PROHIBIDA LA ENTRADA A PERSONAS NO AUTORIZADAS." Biohazard bags and filled sharps containers shall not be stored in Biohazardous Waste Storage Bin for more than seven calendar (7) days. The waste hauler is responsible for cleaning all reusable rigid containers that are used for accumulation, transportation and storage of medical waste. The containers shall be washed and decontaminated before returning for use. In the event a spill occurs during transport or storage at SJC Public Health the spill shall be disinfected and cleaned up immediately. The Supervisor shall be notified to determine if there has been an exposure to an employee. The approved method for decontamination is to contain spill with absorbent disposable towels or other absorbent material and then to disinfect with a fresh 1:10 solution of bleach. The solution should be allowed contact with the area for a minimum of 3 minutes. The amount of solution mixed will be no more than can be used at any one time.
