Additional Information
Page 2
e. Same as (d) above.
f. No
g. Yes, receipts for pick ups and tracking information and
forms to be maintained for 3 years by Administrative
Services for P.H. Services.
h. As follows:
1) Spills: The laboratory is in the process of
developing written procedures to handle biohazardous
spills. The aim will be to protect staff by
containing and decontaminating the spill or by
removing staff from the area and then
decontaminating such a spill as needed. (See
provisional procedure for "Acid-fast bacteria"
spill attached) .
Biohazardous Spill Kits : "Panic Packs" are being
prepared so that items needed to clean up a spill
are readily and quickly available (see example
"Panic Pack" attached) .
2) Exposures: Health records are maintained on each
employee in the laboratory. Current recommendations
include base line blood (drawn annually) , tuberculin
skin test annually, hepatitis B immunization, rabies
immunization and annual surveillance of immune
status to rabies. Employees are also screened for
immune status to rubella, rubeola and varicella
zoster viruses. Employees are directed to
immediately report to their supervisor all accidents
and any potential exposure to an infectious agent in
the laboratory.
3) Equipment failures: Two large steam sterilizers are
used and maintained in the laboratory. Most of the
infectious waste is being removed from the
laboratory by a hauler. If one autoclave were to
fail, the second autoclave would accommodate the
required sterilization needs until the repair is
completed on the first unit.
