A HEALTH CARE SERVICES <br /> EMORANDUM <br /> Jate: December 22, 2016 <br /> To: ALL STAFF <br /> Subject: ADDENDUM TO OPERATIONAL PROCEDURE 157 MEDICAL WASTE <br /> MANAGEMENT PLAN <br /> The following are changes to Operational Procedure (OP) #157, which will take effect <br /> immediately: <br /> V. PROCEDURE: <br /> A. Types of Medical Waste Generated <br /> 6. Chemotherapy Waste: <br /> Waste that is contaminated through contact with chemotherapeutic agents. <br /> 7. Pharmaceuticals Waste: Prescription or over-the-counter drugs, including, but <br /> not limited to, a drug as defined in Section 109925 of Federal Food, Drug, and <br /> Cosmetic Act, as amended [21 U.S.C.A. Sec.321 (g) (1)]. This definition does <br /> not include RCRA waste but does include Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) <br /> Controlled Substances. <br /> B. Handling Medical Waste: <br /> 5. All biohazardous waste which has been placed in a yellow container with a white <br /> lid shall be considered chemo waste and must now be treated as chemo waste. <br /> Chemo waste has been contaminated through contact with or having previously <br /> contained, chemotherapeutic agents. When chemo waste is placed in a <br /> secondary container, that container shall be labeled with the words <br /> "Chemotherapy Waste". "CHEMO" or other label approved by the department <br /> on the lid and on the sides, so as to be visible from any lateral direction, to <br /> ensure treatment of biohazardous waste. <br /> 7. Pharmaceutical waste (including controlled substances) containers will be <br /> secured in areas that are not accessible to I/Ps.
