Page I of 1
Benjamin Escotto [EH]
From: Benjamin Escotto[EH]
Sent: Monday, September 10, 2012 9:10 AM
To: 'Stacy Pinola'
Subject: RE: Bio Medical Question..
Hello Stacy,
Expired medication, whether it be prescription or over-the-counter must be disposed of in a pharmaceutical waste
container. It should not be disposed of in a biohazard container or regular trash container. Medication must be
incinerated for proper treatment. Pharmaceutical waste containers are labeled with "incineration only." However,
most pharmacies I inspect do have a"mail-back" system for expired, unused medication in which the medication
is returned to the manufacturer. I hope that clarifies.
Ben Escotto, Senior REHS
San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department
1868 E. The concern was that if the
expired aspirin was flushed down the toliet it would pollute the water way and if it was thrown in
the trash it would have the possibility of polluting the landfill.
So I told them I would check since it was an interesting conversation and I really did not know
the answer.
Can or should prescription medication and items such as aspirin be thrown in the trash or bio
container?
Thanks again for taking the time to answer my question.
Stacy Pinola
Facilities Planner/Environmental/
Grounds Manager
9/10/2012
