St. Joseph's Medical Center <br />Policies and Procedures <br />309.0 Pharmacy Waste Removal, Transport and Disposal Policy <br />309.1 Policy <br />Pharmacy Waste will be removed and disposed of from St. Joseph's Medical <br />Center in a safe and sanitary manner and in accordance with state, county and <br />JCAHO guidelines and regulations. <br />309.2 Procedure <br />A. Wearing Apparel <br />Gloves and a cover gown or apron must be worn when handling and <br />transporting Pharmacy Waste. <br />B. Removal <br />1. Pharmacy Waste from medical center departments is to be placed in <br />the Blue and White containers marked "For Incineration Only". <br />2. The containers must be snapped closed before transporting to the <br />steam sterilizer/compactor area. The lid must be checked to make sure <br />it is properly snapped on and sealed. <br />3. Pharmacy Waste can be filled no more that 3/4 full. <br />4. When ready for transport from the department to the steam <br />sterilizer/compactor area the containers must be stored in an area not <br />accessible to the public. <br />5. Full containers will be picked up and transported by Environmental <br />Services staff. <br />6. The containers can be carried or transported by cart to the waste <br />processing area. <br />7. In the Steam Sterilizer/Compactor area they must be placed in the blue <br />storage shed for pick up by a licensed Pharmacy Waste hauler. The <br />blue storage shed must remain locked when not attended. <br />C. Documentation <br />The licensed Pharmacy Waste hauler will provide manifests for all <br />Pharmacy Waste picked up from St. Joseph's Medical Center.
