Svs. 2 . 63 <br /> • EFFECTIVE DATE <br /> TITLE N�� 9-18-89 PAGE 1 OFcL <br /> INFECT:�OA WASTE - Kathleen Building AUTHENTICATION <br /> PURPOSE: <br /> All infectious waste will be contained in DPA approved containment <br /> system. <br /> Infectious wastes are defined as: <br /> 1. Significant laboratory wastes, i.e. pathological specimens, <br /> including all tissues, blood elements, and secretions which <br /> contain etiologic agents, and attendant disposable <br /> fomites. (All currently processed at regional lab. ) <br /> 2 . Surgical specimens, i.e. tissues removed surgically which <br /> contain etiologic agents and attendant disposable fomites. <br /> 3 . Equipment, instruments, and other disposable material which <br /> are likely to transmit etiologic agents from usage on those <br /> suspected or diagnosed communicable disease. <br /> 4. All dressings, sharps, swabs, etc. <br /> 5. "Etiologic agent" means a type of micro-organism, helminth or <br /> virus which causes, or significantly contributes to the cause <br /> of, increased morbidity. or mortality of human beings. <br /> Equipment: Sharps Collector <br /> • (RED) Infectious waste bags - (meet or exceed standard dart <br /> test specifications) . <br /> Procedure: <br /> A. Disposal of needles/sharps <br /> 1. All used needles, syringes and other sharps are to be disposed <br /> of in red puncture resistant "Sharps Collector" provided at: a) <br /> Laboratory, b) all procedure rooms, c) injection room, d) <br /> Pediatric injection room. <br /> 2 . When three-quarters full, the "Collector" will be sealed with <br /> attached cap. <br /> 3. Deposit sealed container in labeled biohazardous box. <br /> 4 . Transport box to locked waste storage area. <br /> B. Handling of Infectious Waste <br /> 1. Place waste in red infectious waste bag. <br /> 2. Secure bag for disposal when 3/4 full. <br /> 3 . A second bag must be used over the first. <br /> 4 . Wear heavy utility gloves before handling waste bags. <br /> 5. Transport infectious waste to locked waste holding area in a <br /> sturdy transport container. <br /> 6. Large volumes of blood or drainage from suction canisters <br /> should be disposed of in collecting canisters as infectious <br /> waste. <br /> 7. If bag spillage or breakage occurs the holding containers are <br /> to be disinfected and cleaned in the East janitorial room. <br /> • Care is to be taken to avoid of the splashing water by using <br /> deep sink with either hot or cold water. <br /> 01266-2 (11-85) <br />
