M <br /> p\ <br /> 77 <br /> 771 <br /> ®v <br /> DEC <br /> INFECTIOUS WASTE POLICY <br /> 7 1 0i <br /> tuber 198I <br /> GENERAL <br /> POLICY: <br /> All infectious waste will be contained in EPA approved contain- <br /> ment system. <br /> Infectious wastes are defined as: <br /> 1. significant laboratory wastes ie: pathological specimens, <br /> including all tissues, blood elements, excreta and <br /> secretions which contain etiologic agents, and attendant <br /> disposable fomites. (All currently processed at regional. <br /> lab. ) <br /> 2 . Surgical specimens ie: tissues removed surgically which <br /> contain etiologic agents and attendant disposable fomites. <br /> 3 . Equipment, instruments, and other disposable material which <br /> are likely to transmit etiologic agents from useage on those <br /> suspected or diagnosed communicable disease. <br /> 4 . all dressings, sharps, swabs, etc. <br /> 5. "Etiologic agent" means a type of micro-organism, helminth <br /> j or virus which causes, or significantly contributes to the <br /> cause of, increased morbidity or mortality of human beings. <br /> Equipment: Sharps Collector <br /> (Red) Infectious waste bags - (meet or exceed standard dart test <br /> specifications) <br /> Procedure: <br /> 1. All used needles, syringes and other sharps are to be <br /> disposed of in red puncture resistant "Sharps Collector" <br /> provided at: a) Laboratory, b) all procedure rooms <br /> c) injection room, d) Pediatric injection room <br /> 2 . When three-quarters full , the "Collector" will be sealed <br /> with attached cup® <br /> Storage: <br /> ! 1. The store room is located on the first floor at the West <br /> garage of the Tommydon building. <br /> 2 . A sign is painted on the door of the storage container in <br /> red lettering. It reads in English and Spanish "Caution <br /> Infectious Waste Storage Area Unauthorized Persons Keep <br /> Out" . <br /> 3 ® The storage container is kept locked. <br /> Disposal: American Enviornmental Management Corporation personnel come <br /> twice weekly to remove the used collection container and <br /> replace it with a clean one® They double bag and tie each <br /> i box. <br /> AEMC personnel are identifiable by uniform. <br /> They go directly to the biohazardous waste container. <br /> n1266-' „;.1a:,) <br />
