usually offered by a large community hos-
pital ; hospital rooms , nursing care and a
dietary service. In addition to the medical
offices and the hospital, each medical center
has a business office, a health plan office,
a social service department, patient assist-
ance personnel , a volunteer "league ' , an
emergency room/department , a laboratory, an
X-ray/radiology facility and one or more
pharmacies . Most medical centers provide
educational centers and/or classes in
subjects such as diabetes , hypertension ,
cancer, stress reduction and smoking.
The facility is planned for three story
structures to an effective height of 47feet
above ground . Communication facilities may
extend above this height. The site plan and
preliminary elevations are shown in Figures 3
and 4.
b. Estimated Number of Employees
Based on Kaiser Medical Centers elsewhere, it
is estimated that the Stockton facility will
employ between 1000-1100 persons at full
development . A February 1984 survey con-
ducted at the Kaiser Medical Center in San
Francisco provided both an arrival time and a
departure time distribution for kaiser
workers which can be applied to any compar-
able Kaiser facility. Employee arrivals and
departures occur throughout the day because
of varying work shifts: office staff and
management personnel have arrival and
departure times centered around an 8 : 30 or
9: 00 AM to 5: 00 PM work day while the nursing
staff work shifts focusing arrival and
departure times around 7: 00 AM, 3 : 00 PM and
11:00 PM. Service personnel have two major
shifts that focus arrival and departure times
around 8: 30 or 9: 00 AM, 5: 00 PM and 1 : 00 AM.
About 58 percent of all Kaiser Medical Center
employees arrive at work between 6 : 00 and
9 : 00 AM and about 51 percent depart between
4 : 00 and 6: 00 PM.
2. Construction/Phasing
Kaiser Permanente is presently operating from
leased space in an existing office building just
north of Tommydon Street across from the site.
Inpatient care is provided at local hospitals. The
first phase of construction , includes a parking
lot and a 90 doctor medical office building (MOb) .
8
