Each Western Dental facility
6. does NOT treat medical waste onsite. It is against company policy to autoclave any
medical waste at the dental facility. Disciplinary action will be taken against any
employee who violates this policy.
7. does NOT want to apply for a Limited Quantity Hauling Exemption. It is against
company policy for any staff member to transport medical waste to a medical waste
treatment facility or transfer station.
Important rules to remember
1. The Floor Supervisor is responsible for filing the tracking documents after each pick-
up in the Sharps Disposal section of OSHA Master Training and Documentation
manual. These documents must be kept on file for 3 years.
2. Always have sharps containers available. Warnings will be given to the Floor
Supervisor if sharps waste is disposed of improperly.
3. Order appropriate size of sharps containers. A "2 gallon" sharps container must be
used in the operatories. Brackets must be mounted to the wall above the chairside
assistance counter to locate securely the sharps container. An additional sharps
container must be placed in the nurses' station.
4. Sharps waste must be disposed of in the sharps container in the operatory.
5. Medical waste must be disposed of in the sharps container located in the sterilization
area. This container will be picked up by the hazardous waste hauler EVERY time,
regardless if it is full or not.
Never over fill sharps containers.
6. The Office Manager is responsible for insuring that the office has a locking trash bin
for the trash disposal.
7. ONCE A SHARPS CONTIANER IS CLOSED IT MUST BE PICKED UP FOR
DISPOSAL WITHIN SEVEN DAYS!
LMHENTOSZ 6/91(REV 11/94)(REV 10/98,9/00, 11-03,3-05)
W:\Quality\OSHA\Master Gray Originals\097B Medical Waste Mgmt.Plan.doc
Page 2 of 3
