Lodi City Landfill November 16,2011
• North of Awani Drive,Lodi,California Project No. 104690061
document the absence of wastes, as applicable and possible. Trench excavations will remain
open long enough to log the trench, obtain samples, and document the trench and excavated
materials on individual logs and with photographs. Because only one exploratory trench will
be excavated at a time, backfilling will be conducted shortly after excavation.
During excavation, trench spoils will be managed to minimize potential runoff, if necessary. If
excessive potential contamination is suspected or observed, VisqueenTM plastic sheeting may
be placed on the ground surface adjacent to the trench prior to stockpiling the trench spoils.
The excavated materials will be placed a minimum of two feet from the trench excavation and
in such a manner that the materials shall be prevented from falling back into the excavated
trench. During excavation, "clean"cover fill soils, if present, will be placed on one side of the
trench excavation. Wastes, if encountered will be placed on the opposite side of the trench to
prevent commingling with the other excavated materials. Dust control during trench excavat-
ing and backfilling will be provided,as necessary,by the trench excavating subcontractor.
Following trench logging and sampling, each excavation will be restored,to the extent practical,
to its original condition,by backfilling with the excavated materials taken from its location. The
trenches will be backfilled in the approximate reverse order they were excavated. The equipment
operator shall generally compact the excavated area using the excavation equipment in a typical
manner using the bucket and/or driving over the excavation with the backhoe. Disturbance of
adjacent areas, such as ruts created by excavating and related equipment and vehicles, will be
smoothed out, as practical, to match the surrounding relatively undisturbed ground surfaces. If
the spoils contain large items or debris, which are unable to be placed back into the trench dur-
ing backfilling, the CalRecycle, EHD/LEA and/or City of Lodi project manager will be notified
regarding how to proceed. If such oversized materials are encountered in trenches,an effort will
be made to not remove such materials and to continue excavation adjacent to these areas. After
backfilling, the trench will be re-staked for future reference. The trench orientation will be re-
corded using a Brunton compass or equivalent instrument, and the GPS coordinates of the
staked location will be recorded on the individual trench logs. ,''
•
