8. Standard Field Activity Procedures <br /> To ensure the safety o"personnel in the work area, practice the following field activity <br /> procedures: <br /> • Stay upwind and a safe distance away from the source of any chemical hazard (i.e. <br /> during trenching activities) whenever possible. <br /> • Staff should remair alert of possible moving ground near the excavation and select <br /> solid ground for observation or sampling. Do not stand on the spoil pile. <br /> • Do not touch or attempt to collect samples of soil, waste material or debris of any <br /> kind without appror riate personal protective equipment. <br /> • Avoid all heavy eqL ipment or machinery operations that can pose a safety hazard. If <br /> heavy equipment o-other vehicles are present, stay out of traffic routes. If staff <br /> needs to remain in traffic areas, advise equipment operators of your presence. <br /> Make sure they seep you and stop the equipment before you approach them. <br /> • When encounterinE asbestos containing waste (ACW)appropriate control measures <br /> must be used to provent airborne dust; such as wetting down the area. <br /> • Never put notebooks or other equipment down in waste areas. <br /> • Portable fire extingi jisher shall be available at the job site. <br /> • Avoid dust clouds E nd dusty operations. Stand upwind and out of the dust plume <br /> area. Leave dusty areas immediately and reenter only after dust has settled or after <br /> dust control is in eft ect. Avoid being splashed by the water truck or entering freshly <br /> sprayed areas. <br /> • When dusty operat ons are anticipated, control measures shall be used; such as a <br /> water truck. <br /> • Avoid loud or susta ned high noise levels. If you cannot hear the person next to you <br /> or the sound is lout enough to be uncomfortable, leave the area immediately and do <br /> not reenter without adequate hearing protection. <br /> • Do not enter encloE ed areas unsupervised, including buildings, sumps, drains or any <br /> low areas where gE s may collect without closely monitoring, continuously, air quality <br /> at all times and without following confined space entry procedures. Avoid low or <br /> partially enclosed or covered areas where gas/vapor may linger, both known or <br /> suspected, that ma! be detected by either instrumentation or by observation. This <br /> includes ground water wells, storm drains or other sub-grade conduits.
