VII. Glossary and Acronyms <br /> vectors,the progress of fires within the landfill,the escape of odor,and excess infiltration of <br /> surface water runoff. <br /> Daily Cover: cover material (usually soil)spread and compacted on the entire surface of the <br /> active face of the sanitary landfill at least at the end of each operating day in order to control <br /> vectors,fire, water infiltration,erosion,and to prevent unsightliness and scavenging. <br /> Waste: can be either ) <br /> Designated 1 non-hazardous waste that consists of or contains pollutants <br /> g <br /> that,under ambient environmental conditions at the landfill,could be released at concentrations <br /> in excess of applicable water quality objectives,or that could cause degradation of waters of the <br /> state;or 2) hazardous waste that has been granted a variance from hazardous waste management <br /> requirements pursuant to Section 66310 of Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations(CCR). <br /> Dewatered Sludge: residual semi-solid waste from which free liquid has been evaporated,or <br /> otherwise removed. <br /> Double Liner: liner system that is constructed of two clay liners,two FMLs or one clay liner <br /> and one FML,with a drainage medium placed between the liners. <br /> Fill: compacted solid waste and cover material. <br /> Final Cover: the cover material that represents the permanently exposed final surface of a fill. <br /> Flexible Membrane Liner: a thin liner commonly 60 thousandths of an inch thick(60 mil) <br /> made of plastic material,often high-density polyethylene(HDPE). Used in landfills as part of <br /> the base liner both as a barrier to protect groundwater from landfill-generated leachate and as a <br /> flow surface for leachate. Currently required by federal law(RCRA: Subtitle D)for all new <br /> MSW landfills and lateral extensions of existing landfills. <br /> Flood Plain: the land area which is subject to flooding in any year from any source. <br /> Generator: the source of materials discharged into the wastestream: the household,commercial <br /> establishment,or factory. <br /> Geotextile: either a woven or non-woven polyester or polypropylene fabric. The woven fabrics <br /> often are used for support(strength)while the non-woven fabrics are used for filtration,drainage <br /> VII.3 <br />
