1.2 SITE CAPACITY AND SERVICE LIFE
The site capacity of a landfill is determined by calculating the volume available between the
elevation of the top of the bottom liner system (as shown on the phase development plan
drawings), and the bottom of the final cover elevations (elevations of the top of the final cover
system are shown on the final grading plan drawing). The refuse capacity is then calculated by
estimating the available volume according to the assumed ratio of refuse to daily and intermediate
soil cover. For an in-place refuse to soil ratio of 4:1, the refuse capacity is equal to eighty percent
of the site capacity. Table 1-1 shows the site and refuse capacity in cubic yards by phases, and
also shows refuse capacity in tons(using an assumed compacted refuse density of 1200 lbs/cubic
yard).
Notes:
(1) Phases I du=Mh IV are horizontal expansion,Phases V and A are vertical expansion.
(2) Refuse capacity(Cy).phase capac;tty*(41(4+1))to account for assumed in-piace refuse to daily cover ratio of 4:1.
(3) Compacted in-place dermly of refuse is assumed to be 1200 Obvey.
The service life of the landfill is determined by comparing the calculated capacity with the
projected waste stream. This is done in Table 1-2, below. Note that no accounting for any cover
materials are included in the calculations for Table 1-2 and that minor numerical differences in
Phases IV, V and VI are attributable to rounding-off of numbers and the fact that the cumulative
refuse capacity might be achieved partially through the year.
