Control or Limit the Emergency <br /> a. If the fire is small and there are no large flammable sources nearby, attempt to extinguish <br /> the fire with soil or fire extinguisher, water should only be used as a last resort. <br /> b. Underground fires should be slowly excavated using extreme caution. Personnel involved <br /> with such work should be protected with the proper personal safety equipment (e.g., <br /> respirators, protective suits). Excavated burning solid waste should be isolated, spread out, <br /> and extinguished. <br /> c. If the fire remains out of control or is producing a lot of smoke, contact the Fire Department. <br /> 2.6.2.3 Explosion <br /> 1. Recognize and Evaluate the Emergency <br /> a. As a general rule, stay completely away from an explosive fire since the fire following an <br /> explosion may result in another explosion. <br /> 2. Take Safety Precautions <br /> a.
