KLEINFELDER
4 SOLID WASTE ASSESSMENT TEST RESULTS
4.1 SITE GEOLOGY
In the area of Foothill Landfill the only exposed sediments are from the Mehrten
Formation. Outcrops within the landfill and approximately 1500 feet outside the current
landfill perimeter were mapped, as shown on Plate 4-1. Specific lithologies observed are
described below:
Sandstone: Grey to dark grey or brownish grey weathering light grey to
buff grey, commonly medium to coarse grained although fine
grained sections do occur. Visible sand grains are comprised
of 60-70% mafic material, as mineral fragments or rock
fragments. Sand is partially consolidated therefore the sand
crumbles with finger pressure. Coarser grained sands are
structurally massive but finer grained sands may exhibit
laminated bed or crossbedding.
Gravel/Very Coarse Sand:
Light grey to brownish-grey gravel layers may occur within
sand units. Occasionally gravel may occur within a finer silty
bed. Clasts ranged from 0.5 to 1.5 inches across although some
sections are mostly very coarse sand.
Siltstone: Brown to reddish-brown weathering light buff to white.
Frequently finely laminated or crossbedded. The distinguish in
feature of fine grained sediments in the area is the occurrence
of distinct fine black grains evenly distributed throughout the
rock.
Claystone: Brown to reddish-brown or pink weathering pinkish buff, buff
to white. Occasionally very fine laminations and crossbeds can
be seen. Black grains very common. In one area black
plantlike material was visible within a pink claystone.
FOOTHILL 22
