The
landfill slopes further down toward a broad valley to the east.
Nearby bodies of standing water include a small pond east of the maintenance shed and
a small reservoir approximately one-third mile southeast of the site. The location of these
empoundments together with existing wells is shown on the site plan Plate H.
REGIONAL GEOLOGY
l_
The Foothill Landfill site is located on the eastern edge of the Great Valley
geomorphic province, a structural trough between the Sierra Nevada and Coast Ranges
geomorphic provinces. Sediments fill the trough to depths up to approximately 30,000 feet
on the west side, thinning to the east. Sediments deposited in the Valley up until the
Tertiary* Period were primarily of marine origin. Nonmarine sediment deposits, including
volcanic flows and sedimentary sequences and terrestrial sediments, began accumulating in the
Tertiary Period.
The Foothill Landfill site is located in an area underlain by volcanic flows and
sediments of Miocene and Pliocene age. These deposits have since been eroded and
weathered to form the present day low, rolling-hill topography.
* See Geologic Time Scale, Plate III.
